Martyrs 2 Months ago

Who was first martyred in the NT for the cause of Christ? Be careful now ya'll. This may be considered a trick question. (And need I say, I could be wrong here with my idea)

Do you mean the first Christian martyr?

Bro BB I ask this question and then I went and looked up the word "Martyr" in Webster's 1828. The 1828 gives two definitions basically. The answer to my question if I would ask again I would say loosly defined as martyr. So....Go ahead and take a shot at it and then you can pounce on me (ha ha) for my trick question. I thought about this today and I put it in a riddle.
"I was and was not,
and was first to die for the cause"

I'll take two guesses:
(1) Christ Himself
(2) Stephen

OK...thanks Kate for trying again. I just wanted this to be a fun kind of fact thing, so folks don't be too hard on me. I originally used the word martyr but later I ask that the word be used maybe in it's most broad definition. So here goes.
"I was and was not and was the first to die for the cause"
Mt. 2:16 The Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
Those poor babies had no idea at the time but they died for the cause.
